Your Present Past

Studies still show that those who raised us have the most impact on our lives. Why is this important? Their influence shapes a lot of our beliefs about pretty much everything. This can be good, bad, or a mix of both.

We are all born into a broken world, meaning we all make mistakes. Your parents made mistakes, their parents before them, and so on. If you are a parent, no matter how hard you try to be the best parent ever, you will make mistakes. This is where God’s grace enters in. Hopefully you experienced mostly good things growing up. Regardless, no matter what flaws we have or our parents had, God is able to use it for good.

If you are one of those people who grew up in a troubled home, where you experienced trauma, it will continue to impact your future, even if you don’t want it to.  I’ve seen this repeatedly in the work I do. While I can help walk people through the process of changing negative beliefs and behaviors, it is not sustainable until you deal with your past trauma.

“The person who is unwilling to face their past is destined to repeat it,” is a quote which comes from George Santyana who stated, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I believe both states are true. If you can’t remember your childhood or your earliest memories start later, maybe after nine to eleven years old, there is most likely serious trauma that needs to be dealt with.

God gave us some safeguards to help us deal with trauma as children. Trauma can get buried until we are old enough to deal with it. Please don’t ignore it because it’s not only negatively affecting how you behave but those who are experiencing you.

The good news is that you can heal from your past and have healthy relationships in every area of your life. I encourage you to seek professional counseling for this so you can experience the abundance God has for you.

“A life at peace gives life to the body.” Proverbs 14:30 NIV
